School Visits to Berwick's Burrell Collection

Berwick Visual Arts and Berwick Museum & Art Gallery have been working together over the last few months to bring together the new Berwick’s Burrell Collection exhibition which opens on 7 February 2015 at The Granary Gallery in Berwick open through to 4th May. The highlight of the exhibition will be the return of Degas’ ‘Russian Dancers’ pastel drawing along with many artefacts and most of the paintings donated by Sir William Burrell to Berwick in 1949. Teachers are invited to book a date to visit the exhibition with their class and have a guided tour of this amazing collection held in Berwick.

This exhibition has been part of a wider project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund which has involved working with local school teachers to devise learning activities based on artefacts and paintings from the Collection. These learning activities form the basis of a new Digital Learning Resource for Schools that all teachers will be able to download and use in the classroom both pre and post exhibition visit. The resources are suitable for all key stages and abilities to use and will be free to download. The digital learning resources provide planned activities based on pieces from the Collection, providing cross curricular learning opportunities including literacy (activities developing creative writing and poetry skills), creative thinking, art and design, cultural identity, maths, history and ICT.

If you would like to book your class into a guided tour of the exhibition, please download a booking form, complete and email to us. Visits will be available on Monday and Tuesday afternoons from 23 February 2015 at 1.30-3pm during school term time during the exhibition period.

We also have funding to provide a limited number of heritage led workshops relating to the exhibition and some funds to provide transport costs if applicable.
