An evening with GÂST

Join our current artists in residence GÂST for an informal opportunity to find out more about their artistic practice, work undertaken taken during their residency in the town to date and plans for their forthcoming exhibition at The Gymnasium Gallery.

During their residency in partnership with the Centre for Rural Economy at Newcastle University, GÂST are exploring the material and cultural identity of three venues of historic and community importance of Berwick-Upon-Tweed – The Berwick Brown Bear pub, the promenade Amusement Arcade, and Shielfield Park, home to Berwick Rangers FC. Through these sites GÂST are considering what it means to historicise site through echoes of collective memory and identify objects of localised cultural significance that signify such reverberations.

Other recent works have included ‘Beacons’ (2017) a temporal landscape intervention made in partnership with The Woodland Trust, which celebrated the uncovering of a secret fire control bunker on the site and ‘Old Town New Town,’ (2016) undertaken with the University of Lincoln, which explored the third wave of ‘New Town’ model planning through the Media Archive for Central England.

GÂST have recently completed an MLitt in Fine Art Practice, at Glasgow School of Art, which included research into the cultural identity and hidden histories of rural areas in Scotland that are linked to the historical trade of Scottish freshwater pearl fishing.

The event is free but please book in advance via berwickvisualarts@maltingsberwick.co.uk or 01289 333 075.
